Fourth Annual Reclaiming Malcolm X Story Night

February 21, 2022 @ 6:00 pm 8:00 pm

Last night we held our fourth annual Reclaiming Malcolm X Story night. We had esteemed guests Imam Makram El-Amin and Dr. Karimah Shabazz tell the story and share lessons from the life of Malcolm X. Sister Saghira Shahid closed the evening with beautiful and inspiring poetry. The incomparable sister Valerie Shirley and sister Hope Sweeney helped make this evening accessible to our deaf brothers and sisters.

The theme of the evening was that of hope, transformation and redemption. We learned that we are created good, innocent and perfect just as Allah wanted and that through life circumstances and life choices, we can put ourselves in a very different position than what Allah has intended. In Islam we believe in the idea of transformation and redemption. Allah can allow us to change to grow and to evolve.

On the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: Allah the Almighty said: O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great as it.
– Tirmidhi (also by Ahmad ibn Hanbal). Hadith 34, 40 Hadith Qudsi

Brother Malcolm changed , evolved and redeemed himself. Through his rise and triumphs he never forgot where he came from. He continued to fight for those who were suffering, struggling and disenfranchised. He used his voice to advocate for truth, justice and humanity until the very end. May Allah be pleased with him .

Thank you to all our esteemed guests for supporting our youth. It truly takes a village!
